On June 11, 2018, Yoon & Yang LLC held a one day seminar on “Major Issues of Construction Laws in the Middle East.”
 

As the Middle Eastern countries have recently witnessed an increasing number of disputes and it is not uncommon that the Middle Eastern countries take legal claims raised by the construction companies for granted, it is crucial that Korean construction companies need to aware a claim strategy in relation to the various types of accidents and issues that occur during the construction. The seminar provided a forum for construction, engineering industry leaders to better understand the challenges during the construction in the Middle East such as delays caused by unforeseen events and additional contract review related to the increase in construction costs.

 

 

The seminar included two sessions and Yoon & Yang’s expert in the Middle Eastern region, English Attorney Yon Soo Kim gave a lecture titled on “Notices, Getting it right in the Middle East.” Yon Soo Kim discussed the legal systems of three countries: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and related construction laws in each country such as liabilities and monetary damage claims. Yon Soo Kim joined Yoon & Yang in March 2018 after serving as an associate director at HKA in Abu Dhabu and she is considered as a leading legal expert on the jurisdiction of the Middle East area.

In the second session, Yoon & Yang’s Partner Young Woo Park addressed the topic on “Korean law issues in overseas constriction projects.” The session explored issues on the applicability of the “Fair Transactions in Subcontracting Act” on overseas construction practices. Young Woo Park also provided an advice on the contract drafting when entering into subcontracting agreements with foreign business partners. Young Woo Park is a real estate and construction expert who has successfully handled numerous overseas and domestic construction and real estate development projects.
