On June 1, 2017, Yoon & Yang LLC held a seminar for multinational companies in Korea on the topic of “impact of and response to the new government’s labor policies.” Attendees included human resources managers, legal team personnel and in-house corporate counsels from major foreign companies.

The seminar was the second that Yoon & Yang held recently on the trends and prospects of the new government’s labor policies. This seminar was solely directed to the management personnel of multinational companies in Korea, whereas the first seminar focused more on the needs of HR and legal departments in Korean companies.

Yoon & Yang’s partner, Chan-Keun Park of the Employment & Labor Practice Group opened the seminar by saying, “This seminar will address the detailed analysis of the new government’s labor policies, the viability of those policies and the impact on companies, as well as the potential strategies for companies,” and further added, “this seminar will be particularly helpful for multinational companies and their managers."

Young Min Kim, a partner of Yoon & Yang’s Employment and Labor Practice Group gave a presentation on the topic of “Moon Jae-In Government’s Labor Policies and Issues Relevant to Foreign Companies.” In particular, Mr. Kim emphasized as follows: The detailed substance of the new government’s labor policies and their feasibility should be discussed based on their relationships with the new government’s economic policies. The reduction of work hours is one of the key means for creating new jobs in the private sector, which is unlikely to be implemented in the imminent future through legislation. Rather, it is very likely that the new government will implement such reduction through the abrogation of administrative interpretation. For foreign companies, which inevitably have significant constraints in personnel management, it is necessary to devise a response plan in advance.”

Following the presentation, Sang Hoon Park, the Head of Yoon & Yang’s Employment & Labor Practice Group hosted the Q&A session. Subsequently, Mr. Park finished the seminar with the following statement: “Yoon & Yang is fully prepared for the changes in the new government’s labor policies and we are looking forward to holding additional seminars for corporate clients in the future. We hope that our corporate clients will successfully resolve their legal issues with the advice from the experienced experts who have extensive research experience in relation to the new government’s policy changes.”
